Best Supporting Actress in the The Go Master?

During a discussion this week (May 2006) on the British Go Association forum about the forthcoming Chinese film The Master of Go - based on the life of Go Seigen, or Wu Qingyuan - one reader helpfully came up with a cast list.

It is to be hoped the carelessness there about names such as Sekoe for Segoe does not signal too much artistic licence in the film, but the cast list does suggest that a big part of the focus will be on areas of Go's life that will be unfamiliar to a western audience. So we thought a few "programme notes" will help as we all wait on the edge of our seats for the great event.

We have no idea when the film will appear. The shaky state of diplomatic relations between China and Japan at present may well be a factor.

If you can put your hands on copies of last year's issues of the excellent Weiqi Tiandi, though, you will see quite a number of large glossy prints from the film, so it is obviously as near finished as matters. The clip here portrays Go Seigen with the author of Meijin and Nobel prizewinner Kawabata Yasunari. The other prints, part of a wall calendar - yes we are all counting the days! - suggest we are in for a visual treat at the very least.

In the meantime, a few notes on supporting actress roles, Kita Fumiko and Jikoson...
